VATNAJÖKULL ICE CAVE

Iceland is called by some the land or kingdom of fire and ice. Fire alludes to the volcanoes located on the island, and ice alludes to the glaciers that cover the local terrain. There are approximately 269 of them. But there is something else that this beautiful land is famous for. Namely, the wonderful ice caves with their unusual winding shapes and blue color. In this guide, we will focus on the Vatnajökull ice cave and the glacier of the same name.

DESCRIPTION

The Vatnajökull ice cave is one of the largest natural ice caves in Iceland. It amazes tourists with its size, beautiful blue colors, enchanting structure, and the peace that reigns within it. The play of light that takes place inside it creates a surreal atmosphere, making it a must-see for nature lovers and photographers.

The Vatnajökull glacier, sometimes called the “Vatna glacier,” is one of the largest ice caps in Europe, covering approximately 7-8% of Iceland’s surface area (data varies depending on the source). Its area is 7,700-8,300 square kilometers (data depending on the source), and the average thickness of the ice is about 380-400 meters. Its landscape is very diverse, consisting of mountains, valleys, canyons, waterfalls, glacial rivers, and even volcanoes, which are located beneath the thick layer of ice. Grímsvötn, Bárðarbunga, and Öræfajökull are volcanoes that are still active. At the southern end, you can see the majestic Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, which was formed by the melting of the Breidamerkurjokull glacier, part of the Vatnajokull National Park, one of the most visited nature reserves in Iceland. The lagoon consists of icebergs that break off from the glacier and drift towards the Atlantic Ocean.

Glacier Vatnajökull is classified as an ice cap, meaning that the ice mass covering a given area often has a relatively flat surface with bulges at the tops of the mountains and volcanoes it covers. Ice caps such as Vatnajökull form in polar or high mountain regions where snow accumulation is greater/faster than melting, leading to a gradual accumulation of ice over time. Such glaciers are in relentless “motion” because the ice frequently crumbles under its weight, which means that ice canyons and the edges of the glacier never look the same and their form often changes. In addition, Vatnajökull has numerous outlet glaciers that extend from its center and flow down valleys, sculpting the landscape there. The outlet glaciers in Vatnajökull are responsible for the formations that make up the local glacier tongues and amazing ice caves.

HOW VATNAJÖKULL WAS FORMED

The Vatnajökull glacier was shaped by geological factors over thousands of years. Its formation began during the ice ages, especially during the last glaciation, approximately 110,000 years ago, and ended about 12,000–14,000 years ago. During the ice ages, snow accumulated in central Iceland, where it gradually turned into ice under the influence of very low temperatures, thus creating a huge ice sheet. Over time, the layer of snow and ice became thicker and more extensive, forming a large glacier covering an increasingly larger area of the island.

Under the weight and pressure of the accumulating ice and snow (which contributed to the growth of the glacier and its “movement”), the glacier under its cover began to comprise U-shaped valleys and canyons. About 20,000 years ago, the ice sheet began to melt and gradually retreated inland, and 10,000 years ago it covered only the highest mountains in the central highlands of the island. Since then, Vatnajökull has been the largest glacier in Iceland and the second largest in Europe (after the Severny Island ice cap on Novaya Zemlya in Russia).

HOW ICE CAVES FORM IN ICELAND

In some countries, ice caves look almost the same year after year because temperatures don’t fluctuate significantly. However, caves in Iceland are different. Ice melts in the summer due to rising temperatures and sunlight, which contributes to the formation of water channels that form within the glacier or at its base. Water then flows through the glacier, creating crevasses, tunnels, chambers, and passages that together form the local caves. In summer, these caves are usually filled with water and inaccessible to visitors. When temperatures drop in autumn and the glaciers stop melting, the water flow in the caves begins to decrease and often stops completely in winter, when temperatures drop below freezing. This is how ice caves are formed. Then the guides start looking for new caves, large and safe enough so that they can be made available to tourists. However, when winters are warmer, rainier, and with strong winds, the caves may still be partially flooded with water, and in such a case, for safety reasons, such caves are not open to tourists.

WHY IS THE ICE IN A CAVE “BLUE”?

One of the most distinctive features of Iceland’s ice caves is undoubtedly their beautiful blue color. Glacial ice appears blue, and the main factor contributing to this is its density, which is much greater than ordinary ice, such as that taken from a freezer. This ice is also significantly thicker. This is the result of a process standing thousands of years, in which snowflakes that first fell on the frozen ground and then on the ice, snowflakes are compressed by the next snowfall, which fell and then refreezes, turning into ice. When under the influence of masses of ice and snow striking compression, air bubbles are stuffed to the surface, whereby the ice becomes thicker and thicker. When a block of ice is too dense to contain air, light can penetrate deeper. And the deeper light penetrates such ice, the more red color (and other colors) it loses along the way, except blue, giving the ice such incredible color. That’s why glacial ice in Iceland has this magical shade of blue, creating a mesmerizing atmosphere inside caves.

LOCATION

Vatnajökull glacier is located in the southeast of Iceland, and the Vatnajökull cave itself is located on its rim, concretely in the area of the Breidamerkurjokull glacier, which is the outlet glacier for the much larger Vatnajökull glacier.

The drive from Reykjavík to the ice cave takes about 5 hours, and the road follows the beautiful coastline bordering the Atlantic Ocean. The meeting point for most tours, whether to Vatnajökull glacier or the cave, is the parking lot at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

It’s recommended to book your tour in advance to ensure that we will book the date that suits us best.
Before setting off, check the weather and conditions in the glacier area.

Always take a guided tour of a cave or glacier.
Avoid touching the cave walls and leaving garbage.

WHAT TO BRING

Hiking boots, insulated and waterproof, are essential for exploring ice caves. If you don’t have such footwear, travel agencies that organize cave and glacier hikes often offer equipment rentals for a fee.
Remember to wear warm and waterproof pants, a jacket, and gloves. It’s best to dress in layers.
If possible, it’s recommended to bring a helmet with the possibility of attaching a headlamp to it.
Photographers will need a tripod, because low light makes it difficult to take sharp photos.
You can bring snacks like energy bars or nuts. A thermos of hot tea is also a good idea.
Bring your camera 😊, but don’t use a flash.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT CAVES?

Ice caves in Iceland are best explored in winter, specifically from mid-November to mid-March. Outside this period, higher temperatures cause glacier melt, which makes exploring the caves dangerous due to the flowing water in the crevices and glacier corridors.

ATTRACTIONS NEAR VATNAJÖKULL CAVE

Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is one of the most popular attractions on the route to Vatnajökull. This beautiful glacial lake formed in the 1920s and continues to grow. Currently, it is the deepest lake in Iceland, with a depth of 248 meters (814 feet). Icebergs from the tongue of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier drift across the lake’s surface, eventually reaching the North Atlantic.

Diamond Beach is a spot near Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon where pieces of drifting icebergs that break off from them settle on the beach. But this is no ordinary beach. The sand is black because it is of volcanic origin. This creates a beautiful sight of diamond ice cubes scattered across the black beach, and that’s where the name comes from.

Vatnajökull is pronounced as “Vat-nah-yer-kutl.”

Eruptions beneath the ice can lead to so-called jökulhlaups, that is, violent glacial floods.

In summer, boat and amphibious vehicle tours take place on the Jökulsárlón Lagoon. The offer can be found on the official websites of companies that provide this type of service. These are: Ice Lagoon and Glacier Lagoon.

SUMMARY

Vatnajökull Ice Cave is undoubtedly a beautiful place on the map of Iceland. Thanks to its incredible labyrinths and the blue color of the ice, visitors to this cave will certainly be mesmerized by its charm, and photographers will spend long moments here capturing beautiful shots. Considering the fact that there are organized hikes to the Vatnajökull glacier and boat trips on the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon nearby, this is certainly not a place that can be ticked off your travel list in just one day of sightseeing.

GERLACH PEAK

Gerlach Peak (Gerlachovský štít) is not only the highest peak of Slovakia and the Tatras but also of the Carpathians. Its height is 2655 m above sea level. It is located on the territory of the Tatra National Park, a beautiful natural area surrounded by glacial lakes and pine forests. It owes its name the village of Gerlachów, which was located in this area in the olden days. Please remember, that the summit can be gain only with a UIAGM certified mountain guide (or you must have such certified if you want to go alone).

WHEN WAS THE SUMMIT REACHED?

It is believed, that the summit of Gerlachovský štít was first climbed in 1834 by Ján (Johann) Still, a teacher and mountain guide from Nová Lesná, accompanied by his brother-in-law Gellhof, the miller Martin Urban Spitzkopf, and two unknown by name chamois hunters.

The first women to stand on the summit of Gerlach were Viennese tourists Paulina Knerr and Josephine Fillunger, July 28, 1877.

The first ascent via the Velická Challenge (Velická try) took place in 1874 led by famous Caucasian and Himalayan mountain climber Mór Déchy.

The first documented ascent of Gerlachovský štít via Batizovská próba was made in 1875 by Slovak climbers mountain guides from the village of Štôla, Ján Ruman-Driečný Jr and Ján Pasterňák.

The first attempt to climb the peak in winter was made in 1902, but only January 15, 1905 that an international team of mountaineers succeeded in reaching the summit via Innkeeper’s Glen (Krčmárov žľab). The guide of the group was Janusz Chmielowski.

HEIGHTS OF THE GERLACH MOUNTAIN

For the first time Gerlach was recognized as the highest peak of the High Tatras in 1838. The forester from Jelczawa, Ludwik Greiner, by means of trigonometric measurements established its height at 2641 m above sea level.

After Slovakia had switched to using the Kronstadt Gauge of the Baltic Sea, Gerlach’s altitude increased to 2654.3 m.

The latest satellite measurements added another ten centimeters and now Gerlach is officially 2654.4 m.

WHAT ANIMALS CAN YOU MEET ON THE TRAIL?

The Tatra National Park is one of the last wild places in Central Europe. Near Gerlach we can meet chamois, marmots or golden eagle. In extreme cases you can also notice a brown bear.

CLIMBING ROUTES

Several trails of diffrent difficulty lead to the top of Gerlach:

Ascent via Velická próba (Normálka)

The most popular route is Normálka, which is relatively easy (I-II degree of difficulty according to UIAA scale). From Sliezsky dom we head towards Kvetnica, then we go through a section – Velická próba, to a saddle called Sedielko. The route leads up to Kotlový štít, where during the ascent you can see the peak for the first time. Descent leads through Batizovský žľab and Batizovská próba back to Batizovská dolina, where it connects with Tatranská magistrála, red tourist path, which leads to Sliezsky dom.

Ascent via Batizovská próba

This easier route (grade I in the UIAA scale) is used especially in the transition period between summer and winter. Since in this period the usual route through the Velická próba is technically difficult, both ascent and descent are done through the Batizovská próba.

Ascent via Tatarkova próba – across Zadný Gerlach

Beautiful climbing route of II-III degree. Descent from the hiking trail in the valley Velická dolina near the beautiful glacial lake Dlhé pleso. Further we are going through Tatarkova próba – the climbing route is secured with chains, calms and steps. On the right side of Tetmaierov žľab towards Gerlachovské sedlo we come Zadný Gerlach. From Zadný Gerlach it is necessary to go over the exposed ridge through Gerlachovské sedlo to the peak of Gerlach. Usually the descent leads through the Batizovská próba.

Martinova cesta (Martinka)

Martinka is a climbing route of II-III degree. Tourist route in the Velická dolina takes us to the Dlhé pleso and further to the ridge of Litvorové sedlo. From there we go further along the ridge through Lučivianske veže, Litvorové veže, Lavínovú vežu, Lavínový štít and Zadný Gerlach. The route continues through Tatarkova próba.

WHEN IS IT WORTH GOING CLIMBING?

The best time for climbing is from the end of May until the end of September. Good weather conditions can also occur in October.

It is also possible to ascend this Slovak peak in wintertime using the route of Batizovská prób). In this case the climbing is more difficult than in summer.

With a mountain guide at your side you can climb Gerlach all year round.

EQUIPMENT, WHICH YOU HAVE TO TAKE WITH YOU

What to take in the summer:

– high hiking shoes with hard soles,

– waterproof sports clothing (jacket, trousers), raincoat,

– mid-layer wear,

– warm underwear, warm socks,

– spare socks, preferably packed in a waterproof bag,

– thin gloves and a hat/cap,

– enough water to drink, a thermos of tea/coffee,

– food and chocolate,

– sunglasses,

– sunscreen,

– a backpack by a capacity of 35-40 liters to pack everything you need.

It is also recommended to take with you also:

– a head flashlight,

– a multifunction pocket knife,

– bandages, painkillers, plasters,

– magnesium to avoid cramps,

– photo camera 😊.

What to take in winter (extra or substitute):

– winter hiking shoes with hard soles

– gaiters

– winter sportswear – two sets of thermal underwear, jacket, trousers, sweatshirt (with hood), vest or down jacket, 2 hats/caps, two pairs of gloves, warm socks

– snow goggles

When going to the summit it is worth asking our guide about such equipment as :

– climbing harness,

– climbing helmet,

– locking carabiner.

And in the winter period also:

– crampons,

– ice axe,

– avalanche transceiver and detector.

(Will they be provided/rented to us by our guide, whether the above mentioned equipment must be organized on your own).

You should also remember about the insurance, which includes:

– Hiking in the mountains

– Mountain rescue service, paramedical services

– Climbing tour with a mountain guide, including unmarked trails.

In addition, do not forget about the EU travel insurance, which includes: repatriation, covers medical expenses, hospitalization and emergency medical and dental care.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO CLIMB TO THE TOP?

Climbing Gerlach Mountain is an all-day hike. Coming to Gerlach from Sliezsky Hotel (where most of the trips start) and safely returning takes from eight to ten hours depending on the chosen route. Of course, weather and physical condition are also important. The hikes start early in the morning, in spring and autumn at 5-6 am, in summer at 4-5 am.

Why so early? First of all, to be sure to return before sunset, and secondly, to avoid bad weather, because mornings in the Tatra Mountains are often beautiful, but by noon clouds may gather around the summit and cover the view of the beautiful Tatra panorama.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS TO CLIMB GERLACH

Average experienced tourist can climb Gerlach without any problems. If you can climb such peaks as Rysy, Kriváň or Slavkovský Peak within the time given on signposts or maps, don’t be afraid to climb Gerlach accompanied by a mountain guide.

GROUP SIZE

The maximum number of people led by one guide tied to the rope is determined by the Technical Commission of NAHV SR (Slovak National Association of Mountain Guides).

In summer it can be no more than three people. In case of more demanding climbs (e.g. ascent of Martinka route) there can be no more than two persons per guide. In winter, the guide can lead no more than two climbers at a time.

CLIMBING ON GERLACH WITH CHILDREN

(FIRST ask the guide with whom you are going to the summit if the age and previous physical preparation of your child will not be a problem in climbing!)

General assumptions:

Children over 7 years of age can participate in guided tours, including an ascent of Gerlach.

Rules to follow when climbing with children:

– There can be only one child under 15 in one group (no more than three people).

– The child should be in good physical condition.

– It is recommended to “test” your child first on a less demanding route, e.g. Lomnica. The difference altitude is only about 400 m, but the hike includes climbing sections.

– The best time to climb with your child is in the summer. From the end of June to the end of September, when conditions are best, without snow cover.

– Your child should have all the gear and equipment necessary for a guided mountain hike.

ACCESS

A good option is to stay in Starý Smokovec or in Tatranská Polianka, two small villages located near the different trails leading to the mountain hotel “Sliezsky Dom”.

TIDBIT

In 1896 Hungarians renamed Gerlach peak to Franz Joseph Peak (Ferencz Jozsef-csucs), Czechs and Slovaks in 1923 to Stit Legionarov, and in 1949 Slovaks changed the name of Gerlach to Stalinov Stit. Gerlachovský štít (Gerlach) has been obtain again since 1959.

SUMMARY

Gerlach is not a mountain to conquer for everyone. To climb it you need to be in good physical condition and have some basic mountain climbing experience. It is also necessary to have properequipment and remember to find a guide who needs to be “booked” up to a month in advance. This applies mainly to the summer season because there are a lot of people willing to go on this type of trip. On the other hand, impressions and views from such trip will remain unforgettable and maybe in the future we will want to repeat the climb. But for a change, on a different trail than the one we choosed last time.

PARTNACH GORGE

The Partnach Gorge was declared a natural monument in 1912. It is one of the most beautiful ravines located in Bavaria. This amazing place is open for tourists all year round, where in winter the scenery is even more magical. Being there, a person can feel the power of nature which is in it in the form of noise of flowing water.

CREATION OF THE GORGE

During the Triassic period, about 240 million years ago, when part of today’s Alps was a sea bed, shelly limestone was settled here. By the “overlapping” of mudstone and limestone was formed the so-called saddle (anticline). The gorge was formed during the last ice age about 10,000 – 12,000 years ago. From now on, the Partnach River has managed to cut into the hard limestone bedrock, creating the remarkable Partnachklamm Gorge. The river begins at Reintalanger and is one of the largest karst springs in the Bavarian Alps. It is mainly power by meltwater from the Schneeferner, a remnant of an Ice Age glacier on the Zugspitzplatt.

WHAT WAS THE RIVER PARTNACH ORIGINALLY USED FOR?

Centuries ago, people used the torrential stream to transport tree trunks felled in the mountain forests. At the top the tree was felled and cut into meter long pieces. In spring, when the water was higher, they were thrown wood into the Partnach so them could be let down into the valley. In 1886 was built here, a makeshift path. This made it easier for highlanders and lumberjacks to access felled trees when it accidentally got stuck. Such river transport was maintained until the mid-1960s. Later, however, “drifting” – transporting wood on water – was discontinued. The reasons were that it was too dangerous and not profitable.

APPROACH

If you decide to come to the Partnach Gorge by car, it is best to park in front of the Olympic Ski Stadium (large parking lot and local bus stop), because entrance to the gorge it is impossible. The parking area can be reached via the B2 road.

(Satellite navigation: Karl-und-Martin-Neuner-Platz, 82467 Garmisch-Partenkirchen).

The Partnachklamm can be reached on foot in about 25 minutes or can be reach by barouche, which leaves directly from the parking lot.

From the station in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, you can reach your destination using the local bus lines 1 and 2.

Here you can find an exemplary route from Munich to the Partnach Gorge (train, bus and car).

PARTNACHKLAMM GORGE IN NUMBERS

HOW TO WEAR

It is worth taking rainwear with you because in many places you can be “splashed” by water flowing from the waterfalls. You should wear shoes with a good sole to avoid slipping. Taking an umbrella is not advisable as the trail often leads through tunnels. In winter, you should dress warmly because the temperature there falls well below zero.

June – September: 08:00 – 20:00.

October – May: 08:00 – 18:00.

* Last entrance to the gorge is 30 minutes before closing time.

Before visiting in winter, please make sure that the gorge is open (e.g. due to icing, it may be temporarily closed).

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Dogs must be kept on a leash.
For safety reasons, kayaks, bicycles and baby carriages are not permitted in the gorge.
Wheelchair access is unfortunately not possible.
Shoes with a good sole and rainwear are necessary for the hike through the gorge.

WHERE ELSE CAN YOU GO?

When visiting the Partnach Gorge, you can also climb the Ecbauer. It is a small mountain with a height of 1237 meters above sea level with views to the Zugspitze, Alpspitze, Wetterstein and Karwendel. The hike takes around 1 hour (one way). From there it is not far to the ski lift which takes you down to the parking lot next to the Olympic Ski Stadium.

TIDBITS

About 200,000 people visit the Gorge each year, what making, that this place is quite popular.

On June 1, 1991, about 5,000 cubic meters of rock broke away from the western rock wall at the southern end of the gorge and formed a 15-meter-high wall.

In March 2003, another landslide of rock of about 500 cubic meters occurred in the northern part of the gorge.

SUMMARY

When you are near the ski jumps in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Partnachklamm Gorge is worth a visit. The gorge is located less than 30 minutes from the ski jumps and can be reached on foot or can be reach by barouche. It’s a great idea for a trip for the whole family in order that to see closely the power of rushing water. Visiting this place, you can break away for a moment from the hustle and bustle of the city.

BAREDINE CAVE

Near the town of Nova Vas in Croatia is the Baredine Cave, where we can see magnificent formations of stalactites and stalagmites. One of the attractions during a visit to the cave is an underground lake located at the foot of a 66-meter gorge. The guided tour includes five rooms that are connected by stairs and paths.

WHERE THE NAME COMES FROM

The name Baredine means the area that surrounds the cave, so the Baredine Cave was given this name. Most likely, it comes from the word “Bared”, which in the local language means uncultivated land. Today, this term does not reflect reality in any way. Over the centuries, the industrious people of the region have transformed the surrounding land into fertile fields and removed rocks. The area that surrounds the cave are located olive gardens and vineyards.

ORIGIN OF THE CAVE

The karst terrain in which the cave was formed is marine sediments from the Cretaceous period (100 million years ago) covered with red soil called terra rossa. The underground part of the cave was formed by water movements during karst processes about 3.5 million years ago.

LOCATION

The cave is located in Croatia, in the northern part of Istria, near Nova Vas, between Poreč, Višnjan and Tar, about 5 km from the coast. The road leading from these places to the cave is marked with signs. There is a large parking lot for cars and buses next to the cave. The cave is surrounded by historical forts, ancient villas and medieval monasteries.

DESCRIPTION

The entrance to the cave has a conical shape that widens at a depth of 15 meters and enters to the first hall. The cave is a treasure trove of stalactites, stalagmites and underground formations that were formed millions of years ago. In this way they formed spectacular crystalline formations, the most characteristic are the 10-meter “curtains”, the figure of the Virgin Mary, the shepherdess Milka, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and the Snowman, a “sculpture” that has become a trademark of the cave.

The Baredine Cave is 132 meters deep, with underground lakes at the bottom that are up to 30 meters deep. It consists of five large halls 60 meters deep and a crater 66 meters deep that leads to several underground lakes.

The cave is a protected geomorphological nature reserve.

The tour is with a guide (included in the price) speaking languages such as Croatian, Italian, German, English and Russian. The tour lasts about 40 minutes and consists of walking about 300 meters of trail through five illuminated by lamps “halls”.

FIRST EXPLORATION

The first documented descents into the cave were made by speleologists from Trieste at the beginning of the 20th century. Then speleologists descended to the depth of 80 meters.

In 1973 the members of Proteus speleological club from Porečany went to the lower part of the cave. There they discovered a corridor that allowed them gain to the underground lakes. Today this place is considered to be the total depth of the cave. On their initiative, the Baredine Cave was declared a natural monument in 1986 because of its special qualities and beauty.

The first concrete actions to “prepare” the cave for visiting by tourists began in the early 1990s. In May 1995 the cave was opened for tourists. Since the first surveys in 1973, explorations have been carrying out to find new, corridors and “halls”.

LEGEND

The legend of Baredine cave comes from the 13th century. The legend says that a nobleman from Poreč named Gabrijel fell in love with a beautiful shepherdess. She lived in Nova Vas, and her name was Milka. The mother, who did not want to allow her son to marry the shepherdess, decided to give the local bandits three gold coins to kill the beautiful Milka. The thugs did not kill the shepherdess, but threw her into a cave. When the noble Gabrijel found out about this, he got on his horse and disappeared. The horse was only found by a nearby cave. Legend says that the fossilized body of the unfortunate shepherdess gradually, year after year, slipped down into the depths of the cave in search of her beloved, but whether she found him no one knows.

UNUSUAL CAVE DWELLER

The Baredine cave is inhabited by an unusual animal. It is the olm that lives in the underground waters of the vast area of the Dinaric Karst, in parts of Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It has a long, soft, eel-like body. Adults usually reach a length of 20 to 25 cm, whereby males being slightly shorter than females. The coloration is white (no pigmentation) with yellowish and pinkish hues coming from the surface capillaries. The olm is also called the “human fish” because of its skin is similar to human. Its eyes are completely retracted and covered with skin due to living in constant darkness. With younger individuals, however, the eyes are still visible. The flattened tail, shorter than the rest of the body, has a leathery fin. This amphibian has small limbs with three underdeveloped front toes, and the hind feet have two toes. Its respiratory system includes gills, skin, and lungs as accessory organs when oxygen levels are very low.

The olm feeds underwater crabs, insect larvae, and mollusks. These animals live in underground caves. It has been scientifically proven that of exceptional conditions, this amphibian can survive even a year without food.

This amphibian reproduces sexually by laying eggs. They reach sexual maturity around the age of 15. If ensue fertilization, females lay eggs 2 or 3 days later. Each female can lay a total of 70 eggs.

Olm is the amphibian about the longest lifespan. It is assumed that they can live even 100 years. The reason so a long life is reduced activity, slow metabolism and lack of enemies in their environment.

TIDBIT

Ceramic vessels were found during the exploration of Baredina cave. This indicates that people lived in the cave in the old days.

SUMMARY

A trip into the Baredina cave can be a nice treat from, for example, sunbathing on Croatia’s beautiful beaches. The cave tour lasts less than an hour, and with a bit of luck you will be able to photograph the olm (which is an endangered species). Nearby is an exhibition of old agricultural machinery, or speleological climbing center “Speleolit” where you can try cave climbing. By the way, you can also taste the local wine, bread and olive oil.

THE CITY OF ROCKS IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC

The City of Rocks is situated in northeastern Bohemia, not far from the Polish border in the Adršpach region. The area of the City of Rocks is situated in the Broumovsko Protected Landscape Area. It is one of the most famous places for climbing in Europe. The whole City of Rocks is naturally built of sandstone.

HOW THE CITY OF ROCKS CAME TO BE

The strongly stratified plateau that is so characteristic for the City of Rocks originated in the Mesozoic era. At that time, the whole area was a sea bed, on which a layer of sandstone was formed in the process of sedimentation. The rocks are made of a softer variety of sandstone, which is why the City of Rocks has a particularly stark character (making it popular with rock climbers) and has many aesthetic shapes and fissures. When the sea disappeared from this region, the rocks were affected by water in the form of rain and wind for millions of years. This resulted in beautiful rock formations resembling towers and columns.

SOME HISTORY

At the beginning, this place was known only among the local community. They would venture there only in the face of danger or to escape from invaders. The first climbers and foreign visitors appeared only at the beginning of the 18th century. Many famous people visited the place then, such as: Queen Louise of Prussia, King Frederick Augustus of Poland, and Emperor Joseph II.

However, for most of the ordinary inhabitants, the place was still unknown. Only after a great fire in 1824, which lasted several weeks, did the rocks begin to emerge from among the bushy forest. In the 19th century, the Adršpach Rocks became more accessible when paths were built and the first visitors arrived.

One story says that in 1772, two Englishmen visited the Adršpach Rocks. They wanted to view thunderstorms from an overlook (it is not known from which one specifically). They waited a total of eight days to see this beautiful but dangerous phenomenon. When it finally came, the storm was so powerful that the English quickly began to search shelter. They were hiding under a rock overhang when lightning struck near them. The lightning struck the precipice opposite them, knocking loose a piece of rock that fell directly in front of the frightened Englishmen. Apparently none of them were injured, and they described the whole dangerous adventure in their “chronicles.”

FIRST ASCENTS

The first mountaineers came to Adršpach from Saxony. A group led by Willi Adam made the first ascent of the rock called “King” on 20 May 1923. However, they did not stop there, deciding also to climb The Battlements, The Saxon Head, Martin’s Crown, and The Eagle. The German mountaineers enamored with the Adršpach Rocks and returned to them many times.

WHERE IT’S WORTH STOPPING

In Adršpach you’ll find many beautiful views. From one of the many lookout points within the City of Rocks you can admire such rock formations as The Lovers, Mr and Mrs Mayor, Štěpánek’s Crown, and the Small and Large Aldermen. Set out on the natural trial “Under Cross Hill”, you will be rewarded a magnificent panorama of the rocks. The trail starts at the main parking lot. A panorama of the entire City of Rock can be enjoyed on Starozámecký Hill, where the ruins of Adršpach Castle are located.

ATTRACTIONS

The Gothic Gate

The Gothic Gate appeared in the City of Rock for the first time in 1839. It was built by Ludvík Karol Nádherný with a network of paths, bridges, footbridges and stairs. At present, the Gothic Gate guards the former entrance to the park.

A boat trip

In the past, the local lake was used to transport lumber. But more than 150 years ago, tourists were taken to the lake, thus beginning the first boat cruises. The Great Waterfall flows out of the lake, which is especially spectacular in winter because it freezes over every year.

The Crystal Sand Quarry

Anyone looking for romance will not want to miss Crystal Sand Quarry. This small lake with crystal clear water was created after a former sand mine was flooded. A scenic path leads around the reservoir.

The 16-meter-high Great Waterfall

A beautiful view is found at The Great Waterfall, which flows into a rocky gorge from a height of 16 meters. The waterfall’s flow rate is regulated, as a lake is situated directly above it, where the boat rides take place. In winter, The Great Waterfall turns into a lovely icefall.

The Sugarloaf

One of the most peculiar formations in the City of Rocks is the so-called ‘The Sugarloaf’. Its curiosity is that it stands on the tip. The upper part is 13 meters wide, and the lower part is 3 meters wide, thus creating the form of an inverted bowling pin. For fear of it toppling over, tourists stick small sticks under it.

The Mouse Hole

While hiking on the rocks, you can try to squeeze through a 50 cm wide crack. It is called The Mouse Hole and is the narrowest alley in the City of Rocks.

The Jug

One of the most impressive rocks in the City of Rocks is certainly the “Jug”. This massive “tower” was first ascended in May 1935 by Josef Janeba, Miroslav Jedlička and Rudolf Otto Bauš, a climbing pioneer of the time. The initial ascent was along a crack on the left side of the wall, leading to a large window and then to the summit. The unique six-meter window forms the “handle” of the Jug, thanks to which gave the tower its name. It’s also often said that the formation has the likeness of a dolphin.

The tallest rock: The Lovers

One of the most interesting rock formations in the Adršpach Rocks is also the highest. Again, the first people to climb its summit were Germans. Otto Rülke, Otto Dietrich and Wilhelm Fiehl made the first ascent of the highest Adršpach Rocks, which is 81.4 meters high, on June 18, 1923.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT THE CITY OF ROCKS?

The best time to visit Adršpach Rocks is of course summer because then the weather is the most reliable (no rain). However, we must remember that this is one of the most popular places in the Czech Republic and there are always a lot of tourists at this time.

If we want to avoid crowds, it is the best to go in winter. Then there are not many people on the trail, and the winter scenery adds to the magic of this place.

TIDBITS

The City of Rocks of Adršpach has been enchanting filmmakers for decades with its unique atmosphere. Besides shooting shots for several Czech feature cartoons, scenes for “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” were shot here.

The rock about named “The Sugar-Making Chimney”, which resembles fingers reaching up to the sky, was first climbed using a special technique. It was wrapping a rope around the stone again and again. Today, this way of climbing is not used.

In the area of the City of Rocks near Adršpach, the Metuje River has its source. It has a beautiful, unusual orange color.

With a bit of luck and patience, the Peregrine Falcon can be spotted in the Adršpach Rocks.

The City of Rocks or the Adršpašské Skály are part of the Stołowe Mountains.

SUMMARY

Adršpach Rocks is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in the Czech Republic that is worth seeing. Maps are available on site and are described in detail. THE SEVEN RILA LAKES

The Seven Rila Lakes are a group of lakes located in the Rila mountain range in southwestern Bulgaria. They are glacial lakes located at 2100-2500 meters above sea level. Some of the longest and deepest rivers in the Balkans have their sources in Rila, such as Marica, Iskyr and Mesta.

LAKE NAMES

Dolnoto Ezero (The Lower Lake):

The first lake that will greet us is Dolnoto Ezero. It collects water from all the other lakes to form the Dzherman River. Dolnoto Ezero was named the Lower Lake because of its location. The lake is set at an elevation of 2,095 meters and its depth is 11 meters.

2. Ribnoto Ezero (The Fish Lake):

Fish Lake is the shallowest of the lakes, its depth is only 2.5 meters. The lake lies at an elevation of 2,184 meters above sea level. Near the lake is the Chalet Seven Lakes, where you can rest before continuing your hike.

3. Trilistnika (The Trefoil):

The Trefoil, or Tri-leaf Lake, is distinguished by its irregular shape and lower shores than the other lakes. Trilistnika is at an elevation of 2,216 meters and is 6.5 meters deep.

Bliznaka (The Twin):

Twin Lake is considered the largest of the lakes as it has an area of 9.1 hectares. It is located at an elevation of 2243 meters and is 27.5 meters deep. The Twin Lake is wide on the shores and narrow in the middle, which gives it an hourglass shape. During the dry season, the lake divides into two smaller lakes, from which it takes its name.

Babreka (The Kidney):

Located at an elevation of 2,282 meters above sea level, The Kidney Lake has the steepest shores of all the lakes. The lake gets its name from its shape, which upfront resembles the shape of a kidney. The lake is 28 meters deep.

Okoto (The Eye):

The lake was named The Eye because of its oval shape, which resembles an eye. It is the deepest circus lake in Bulgaria with a depth of 37.5 meters. It is located at an altitude of 2,440 meters.

Salzata (The Tear):

The Tear Lake, about the smallest surface, owes its name to the clearest water of all the lakes. It is the highest lake at 2,535 meters above sea level and 4.5 meters deep. The water in Salzata is so clear that you can see the bottom of the lake.

FAUNA AND FLORA OF THE LAKES

The cold and frosty environment of lakes is not suitable for habitation. The reason is the low water temperature(by rain-fed and snowmelt). Some lakes are home to minnows and trout.

WHEN TO GO TO THE RILA LAKES

The busiest and most frequent time to visit the lakes is summer season, specifically July and August. This is an ideal solution because temperatures then exceed 10 degrees Celsius and there is less risk of storms.

On the other hand, if we want to avoid crowds we can go in the spring or autumn. In these seasons the average temperature is between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius. However, there is a greater chance that the weather during our hike may break. In extreme cases, you’ll have to abandon the expedition.

For more experienced people, an interesting option can be going to Rila Lakes in winter (average temperatures are around -5 to -10 degrees Celsius). Of course, you have to be very careful on the trails, because the weather in winter is even less predictable (you should also take some hiking gaiters or crampons with you).

Lakes freeze usually in October and do not melt before June. The ice cover at this time can be up to 2 meters thick.

HOW TO REACH

Rila National Park is located 2 hours south of Bulgaria’s capital Sofia. Near the cable car there is a parking, where you can leave your car. From the parking you can go to the trail that leads to Rila Lakes or you can use the cable car. Prices are as follows (2022).

One way: 12 BGN (Bulgarian lev)

Two way: 20 BGN

For children and seniors:

One-way: 8 BGN

Two-way: 12 BGN

ACCOMMODATION IN THE AREA OF RILA LAKES

If we would like to stay longer and explore the area, a good idea is to stay overnight in one of the mountain huts. In the area of seven lakes there are two mountain huts where we can stay overnight.

There are also several guesthouses in the village of Panichishte, which is outlying less than 9 km.

WHAT TO TAKE WITH YOU

General equipment.

Going for a hike on the Rila Lakes, which will last (according to the maps) about 10 hours (if we choose the option without the cable car, and the option with the lift in both ways, it is about 6 hours), worth to take: lotion to protect against the sun, warm clothes, sunglasses, raincoat, hat, something to sit on the ground and comfortable shoes with good support for ankle.

Own food and drinks.

As a last resort, if we run out of something, we can buy something at the mountain hut. However, you should keep in mind that not everything can be bought there.

Good shoes are a basis.

Remember that terrain can be wet and slippery due to snow. Therefore, shoes with a good grip/sole are essential.

Appropriate clothing.

While the weather may be warm and sunny in the region, the weather in the mountains can be changeable. Therefore, it is always a good idea to take an extra layer of waterproof clothing with you. However, you should wear under your jacket an extra sweatshirt or long-sleeved shirts. Even in summer, some lakes remain covered snow.

AND WHAT DOES THE LEGEND SAY?

According to legend, thousands of years ago, when the planet was not yet inhabited by humans, in the mountains of Rila lived a pair of giants. They loved each other very much and valued the beauty and comfort of their home. It was so beautiful, warm and cozy that every living creature was enchanted by it. And the love the giants was celebrated by every creature.

Unfortunately, one day evil forces passed by the giants’ home. As soon as they saw this beautiful place, they became angry because they envied the giants’ happiness and love. They decided to destroy them the house and love. They sent dark clouds, destructive winds, and earthquakes. The giant husband stoutly defended every blade of grass, every little stream and flower. He protected his beloved wife and after some time defeated the evil powers. This however, only increased their anger, and their cruelty to carry out your’s wicked plans. In the hard fight, the young giant was killed. Satisfied with their accomplishment, the evil powers disappeared, leaving behind broken rocks, devastated valleys, and a grief-stricken woman.

The anguish of the young widow was so great that her tears gushed an endless stream that flowed down to the valleys. Her tears were collected into clear lakes of pristine clarity.

Before reaching at Lake Babreka (The Kidney), mountain guides show travelers a huge stone located toward Lake Salzata (The Tear). It “shows” a man and a woman of huge size. According to legend, these are the figures of two giants in love with each other. They will remain there forever in order that “protect” their beautiful home.

TIDBITS

Paneurhythmy Dance – In mid-August, visitors The Seven Lakes of Rila can be witness the Paneurhythmy dance. Hundreds of people from Bulgaria and around the world, dressed in white, dance and practice in large circles near the Kidney Lake. This dance was invented by Bulgarian philosopher and spiritual teacher Beins Douno (Peter Deunov). It consists of a sequence of exercises performed to music to achieve inner balance and harmony. Every year for three days (between August 19 and 21) held in the park, a big festival dedicated to Beinsa Douno. Rila is a sacred mountain for the followers of Douno and they over here that come to welcome the rising sun.

The construction of the cable car caused a lot of controversy among environmentalists and people who appreciate the beauty of wild nature. The reason was the construction of the cable car on the territory of the reserve, and the authorities of the park were apparently accused of bribery (in Bulgaria, unfortunately, this is not uncommon).

About 500,000 tourists from all over the world, arrive in The Seven Rila Lakes every year.

GROSSGLOCKNER ALPINE ROAD

The Grossglockner Alpine Road is named after the highest mountain in Austria, Großglockner, which measures 3,798 meters above sea level. It lies on the border between Carinthia and East Tyrol, inside the High Tauern National Park, about surface 1,856 square kilometers. The park includes 266 mountains, about 550 lakes and about 250 glaciers. But before we get to the description of this beautiful road, a short history of how it came to be.

DIFFICULT BEGINNINGS IN DIFFICULT TIMES

In 1924, when few people owned cars, the first plans for a road along the Großglockner mountain were presented. At the time, these plans evoked only sarcasm. Mainly because Austria was struggling with economic and social problems caused by the loss of World War I. In addition, Austria as a country had shrunk by one-seventh of its former, pre-war size.

On October 29, 1929, after the crash of the New York Stock Exchange (known as Black Tuesday) and the subsequent Great Depression, Austria also was faced with an economic crisis. The country therefore needed projects to combat the ever-increasing unemployment.

The Austrian government again reviewed the plans for the “Großglockner Hochalpenstraße” again and decided to continue with the original construction plans from 1924. It also assumed that the width of the road would be 6 meters (originally the road was to be 3 meters wide, with the possibility of widening it to 5 meters).

Tourism was expected to pay off the cost of building the road and provide a steady income from tolls. But not only that. The idea was also to stimulate so-called high-end tourism in Austria. This concerns the consumption of goods and services among the more affluent population. Cars in those days were a luxury that only wealthy citizens could afford.

In 1930 on August 30 at 09:30 the first explosive charge was detonated under the future high mountain road Grossglockner. The road owes its existence to the road engineer Franz Wallack and Franz Rehrl, the governor of Salzburg. They were the first to drive the gravel road in 1934, when it was not yet finished. Thanks to nearly 4,000 workers, the road was completed on August 3, 1935 and officially opened that day.

As the economic situation improved in Austria and Germany after the Second World War, more and more cars appeared on the roads. At that time, the road was further modernized and expanded. The parking were enlarged and new were built to accommodate 4000 cars (previously it was 800 cars) and the road was widened from 6 meters to 7.5 meters. The maximum speed allowed on the road was also raised from 40 km/h to 70 km/h. New catering and accommodation facilities were also built over time.

GROSSGLOCKNER ALPINE ROAD IN NUMBERS

GUIDE

There are a few things to keep in mind when preparing to drive the Grossglockner alpine road. First of all, the route is closed during the winter and is open for tourists from the beginning of May until the beginning of November (although the time when the route is opened and closed depends on weather conditions and may change, so it is worth checking the dates of opening on the official website, which you can find here).

This road is toll and prices are as follows (2022).

– 38 EUR for cars

– 28 EUR for motorcycles

The toll booth is near Wildpark Ferleiten (to the north) and near Heiligenblut, (to the south).

The toll can be paid in cash or by credit card.

Also keep in mind the opening hours of the Grossglockner road, and they are as follows.

From the beginning of May to 31 May, 6.00 am to 8.00 pm

1 June to 31 August: 5.30 a.m. to 9 pm

1 September to the beginning of November 6.00 am – 7.30 pm

The last possible entrance is 45 minutes before the road closes.

It is worth remembering that the weather in the Alps can change at a short time. In spring and late autumn, you can experience occasional short snowfalls. Therefore, you should think about taking warm clothing for the trip and a solid full footwear. For those who would like to spend a few days in this beautiful place, there will be no problem finding accommodation in mountain hotels or cottages (after prior reservation, of course).

This popular road in the eastern Alps can be crowded by tourists on sunny summer days. Therefore, a much better idea is to go during the beside season, (between May and June, or between October and November). It is also good to avoid weekends and public holidays, as the road is also popular with locals. Another alternative is to stay overnight in one of the hotels or huts located on the pass near the road. Then, for maximum driving pleasure, get up early and leave for the road at 6 or 7 am, so that other drivers do not distract us, and we can enjoy the beautiful views.

WHERE TO STOP

Along the highway, there are many places to stop, take pictures and enjoy the beautiful views. These include:

Edelweißspitze (2,572 m) – a small detour from the main road with an amazing 360-degree panorama of more than 30 three-thousand-metre peaks.

Gamsgrubenweg hiking trail – an easy hiking trail with incredible alpine views, leading from Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe along the Pasterze glacier, to the Wasserfallwinkel. It is of course possible to continue to Oberwalderhütte mountain hut, but the route becomes more difficult after crossing the Wasserfallwinkel and is not recommended for persons without adequate preparation.

Tourist Center Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe (2,369 m) – named after the Habsburg emperor Franz-Josef, who probably to have hiked here in 1856. Here you can find interesting facts about glaciers, the Glockner exhibition and the Glockner panorama hall. From here, you have a view of the longest glacier in the Eastern Alps, the ” Pasterze”, which has about 9 kilometers long. The visitor center is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., from mid-May to early October (find current opening hours here on the official website).

TIDBITS

The Grossglockner Alpine Road is visited by more than one million tourists a year, making it the most visited tourist attraction in Austria, after Schönbrunn Palace.

The observatory at the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe tourist center was built with the support of the Swarovski family. Wood and glass were used in the construction, and its design reminds of mountain crystal.

Franz Rehrl was the first driver to drive a car on the Grossglockner alpine road on September 22, 1934 (which was not yet completed) in a converted Steyr 100 car.

SUMMARY

The Grossglockner Alpine Road is one of the most beautiful alpine roads, not only in Austria but in Europe. It enjoys great popularity and is visited by over a million tourists every year. Despite the difficulties that were encountered during its construction in the form of the Great Depression after World War I and the economic crisis of 1929, eventually a road was built. Thanks to this, every year, thousands of drivers can ride with a smile on their lips on the serpentines of the High Tauern National Park and admire the beauty of the Alpine mountains.

SAVICA WATERFALL

Waterfall Savica, in Slovenian Slap Savica is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Slovenia. Its main quality is that the flowing water divides into two streams. The smaller one is 25 meters high, and the bigger one is 78 meters high. Thanks to that, the waterfall resembles the letter “A”.

WATER – WHERE DOES IT COME FROM?

The main creek is from the Triglav Lakes Valley (Seven Lakes Valley). Waterfall Savica, flows out of a steep wall from an altitude of 836 m and is the source of the river Sava Bohinjka. The water flows into an alpine limestone karst cave, where it then splits into two streams. It hides in its depths, numerous siphons and underground lakes. Access to it is possible only with a guide and appropriate equipment. The waterfall continues its course and flows into Lake Bohinj, which is its main source. The water from Lake Bohinj is also the source of the Sava Bohinjka, which after merging with the Sava Dolinka forms the Sava River.

HOW TO GET TO SAVICA WATERFALL?

Savica Waterfall is located at the western end of Lake Bohinj, above the village of Ukanc. At the base of the waterfall at Koča pri Savica there is a parking lot (cars: €5 (3 hours) / €10 (day), motorcycles: €2 (3 hours) / €5day) and an attractive mountain hut offering food and drinks.

You can check the price list of parking lots at the Savica Waterfall on the interactive parking map of Bohinj (link here). You can also leave your car at the parking lot opposite the Zlatorog bus station in Ukanc (about an hour’s walk to the parking lot at the Savica Waterfall).

From Bohinj Camping (link here) near Lake Bohinj, there is a nicely marked path towards Slap Savica. It will take us about an hour and a half walk to get to the waterfall.

Trains run from the train station in Bled (located on the shore of the lake) and from the main train station in Ljubljana. You can also take to the train in your bicycle.

From Lake Bled: The train trip lasts 20 minutes. The train runs seven times a day.

From Ljubljana: The train ride lasts 2 hours, and it departs seven times a day. At the Jesenice train station, change to another train going in the direction of Bohinjska Bistrica.

Both trains do not go to Ribčev Laz or Ukanc. They stop at Bohinjska Bistrica train station, which is also the last stop. Bohinjska Bistrica is 3 km from the lake. From the train station you can come in 5 minutes to the bus station, where coaches go to Ukanc (the journey lasts about 20 minutes).

To Bohinj everyday go regular buses from Bled and Ljubljana. Some buses run only to Ribčev Laz, and others to Ukanc (from Ukanc it is an hour’s walk from the Savica Waterfall).

The hike to the Savica Waterfall can also be started from Ribčev Laz. From there, the trail leads along the southern part of the lake to Ukanc and then to the waterfall. This 11-kilometer hike takes about two and a half hours.

There is a bike path along the same route from Ribčev Laz, but it is not marked as a bike trail. So one should to ride on the path or the side of the road. A mountain bike is recommended.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GO?

The best time to visit Slap Savica is late spring or early summer, when there is a lot of snow melting in the mountains. Then the Savica Waterfall flows the most water and is the most spectacular.

Keep in mind that this is one of the most popular attractions in the area and many group tours visit this place. Therefore, it is best to go in the early morning or late afternoon.

The waterfall is usually entered from the Koča pri Savica hut, located in the western part of Lake Bohinj. Slap Savica is about 20 minutes walk from the hostel. You have to pay access.

The path to the Savica Waterfall is open all year round except for periods of bad weather, ice and snow.

The path to the waterfall is not adapted for baby carriages and wheelchairs.

At the very end of the road to the waterfall is a gate. It prevents people from getting too close and, thus, protects against possible accidents involving tourists.

WHERE ELSE TO GO?

Koča pri Savici hut is the starting point into towards Komna plateau and The Valley of the Triglav Lakes. The first hiking trail leads from Koča pri Savici through the valley to Dom na Komni hut. The hike lasts about three hours.

The second hiking trail leads first to Črno Jezero (Black Lake) and then to a hut nearby the Dvojno Jezero (Double Lake) (walking time 4-5 hours). The trail is steep but well protected with beautiful views.

Bohinj is an excellent example of a typical glacial landscape. During the last glaciation 20,000 years ago, the Bohinj glacier was the largest in Slovenia, and its thickness was up to 1 kilometer.

FURKAPASS

The Furkapass is one of the highest and most beautiful mountain passes in Switzerland. The road stretches 2,429 meters (7,969 feet) across the two cantons of Valais and Uri. It is also considered one of the most dangerous and difficult roads in Europe. While driving along this scenic road, you can enjoy views of the Rhone glacier, the Schöllenen gorge, and the Galenstock summit rising to an altitude of 3583 meters.

HISTORY

The pass was used during exist of the Roman Empire for transporting goods and marching troops. Later, from the 13th century, appeared a trail for mules at the pass, which carried more and more goods, such as salt, wine, furs and also grain. In the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries, the Walser people (one of the Alemannic tribes) used the pass as a trade route between Valais, Uri and Graubünden. In 1864 started the construction of the road from Hospental to Oberwald, and in 1866 it was officially opened (some sources say it was 1867). At first, a horse-drawn post office operated along the route until the first postal bus passed through the pass in 1921. In 1911 started the construction of the Furka Railroad, which was opened in 1925. It could only be used for a few months of the year when there was no snow. In 1982 built, the Furka Tunnel. Consequently, train rides could be made all year round.

WHERE IS THE FURKAPASS LOCATED?

The road is located in the Swiss Alps, on the border of the cantons of Uri and Valais. Furkapass is located in the Lepontine Alps, in the heart of the Saint-Gotthard Massif. The nearest village/community where you can stay overnight while being near this beautiful road is Obergoms.

HOW TO GET TO THE PASS?

The pass is located on road 19, which connects Brig in the west with Chur in the east. The route is start in Gletsch and end in Andermatt (or vice versa, depending on whether you are driving from west to east or east to west).

WHEN IS THE PASS OPEN?

The pass is usually open from the end of May to early November. Before heading out in the trip, check information about weather on the official website (link here) whether a road has been closed due to bad weather.

IS THE FURKA ALPINE ROAD DEMANDING?

The road leading to the pass from Gletsch is wide and has two lanes. However, on the Realp side, it is narrower, and sometimes you have to stop in order to two cars can pass each other. On weekends and during the holiday season, there is more traffic on the route. During this period, it is best to leave early in the morning, because then you can enjoy the ride. 250,000 people pass through the pass each year on bicycles, motorcycles, cars, buses, or the historic steam train that runs through the local mountains. It is a route with amazing views, but you have to remember that it has a lot of sharp corners. The road is well-marked. However, you must pay attention to the atmospheric factors. When it rains, driving becomes difficult and extra caution is required.

FURKA CAR TRANSPORT

In winter, the road to the Furkapass is closed. During this period, the car can be transported by train through the Furka base tunnel, which connects Realp and Oberwald. Furka Car Transport, runs year round and the trip takes only 15 minutes. Train departures are every 30 minutes from Friday to Monday and every hour from Tuesday to Thursday. However, riding the pass by car or motorbike in the summer is definitely a more rewarding experience. 😊

WHERE FILMED A MOVIE “GOLDFINGER” WITH JAMES BOND?

In 1964, the sharp corners in the Furkapass have been remembered in cinema history, thanks to a scene in the film Goldfinger. Filmed over there chase between James Bond’s Aston Martin DB5 (Sean Connery) and a Ford Mustang driven by Tania Mallet, whose only acting role was in Goldfinger. This scene was shot in front of the Rhone glacier. If you want to feel like James Bond, you can visit the iconic gas station in Andermatt where Bond and Tilly part ways after their failed attempt to assassinate Goldfinger – now it is part of the Aurora Hotel. One of the curves on the east side of the pass is even named “James Bond Strasse”. At the sign, there is a viewpoint with a small parking area. The chase scene, featuring Bond, can be viewed below.

WHAT TO VISIT IN THE AREA

Hotel Belvedere

Hotel Belvedere is a hotel located by the road to Furkapass. It was built on a curve overlooking the Rhone Glacier. The road to the pass was opened in 1866 and the hotel in 1882. Rebuilt in 1890 and 1903, it then became a very popular stopping place for tourists. It owed this panorama to the Rhone Glacier and served as a starting point for mountain expeditions Within a one century, automotive progress has made crossing the Alps became easier and therefore more accessible. The retreat of the Rhone Glacier by almost a kilometer has made that the view at the glacier became less spectacular. As a result, the hotel first closed in 1980 and reopened about ten years later. As of 2015, the hotel is closed again.

Rhone Glacier

The Rhone Glacier (Rhonegletscher or Rottengletscher in German) is located at the northeastern end of the canton of Valais in Switzerland. It gives start the Rhone River, who’s the source is near the town of Gletsch. The river has influx in the Gulf of Lions on the Mediterranean Sea. The glacier extends over 8 kilometers (5 miles) and reaches a width of some over 1 kilometer (3280 feet). It has a surface of 16 km2. Like most alpine glaciers, it has regressed considerably since the mid-19th century. It is easily accessible thanks to the road to the Furkapass. The glacier has a blue ice tunnel length about 100 meters, where there are the “ice halls”. The tunnel and halls have been re-cut into the glacier every year since 1870.

Goms Bridge in Valais

In the canton of Valais a Goms Bridge was built connecting the villages of Fürgangen and Mühlebach. The bridge is 280 metres long, and it is located over the Rhone River. It is one of the longest hanging bridges in Valais. Walking on it, you can feel its gentle swaying. The Goms Bridge is open all year round.

In summer, you can take a ride on the historic steam train Furka, which runs on the route Oberwald-Gletsch-Realp. Rides take place from June to October. You can find all the information you need here on the official website.

The name of the pass comes from the Latin word furca, which in ancient times meant an object with split tips resembling a pitchfork, used as a pitchfork in the household and also as a support in the cultivation of, for example, vines.

SUMMARY

Being in Switzerland, anyone who feels good behind the steering wheel should drive the swichbacks of the Furkapass. This 30-kilometer route, which is one of the highest roads in Europe, will provide drivers and also passengers unforgettable impressions and views. And for those less motorized, wait a 2-hour ride on the Furka Steam Railway with extraordinary panoramas of the Central Alps.
