ELK ISLAND NATIONAL PARK

Elk Island National Park is located in the state of Alberta, Canada, just 30 minutes east of the city of Edmonton. The reserve is famous for its rich flora and fauna. Nearly 250 species of birds, 44 species of mammals and some 450 species of plants can be found here. The most popular, of course, are the buffalo, whereby some people call this place a buffalo park, or not an elk park.

DESCRIPTION

The origins of Elk Island National Park date back to 1906, when five local men asked the government to create a refuge for elk and, on occasion, also for other wildlife. The government agreed to such a proposal and sectionalized an area of 41 kilometers for the future Elk Island reserve. A year later, a couple of dozen plain bison that were brought here were also taken under protection in order that protect the species. When the number of animals approached to 400, most of them were later relocated, but about 50 bison remained and formed a herd count today of about 300 individual. Today, the reserve supplies and transports surplus bison to other wild places in Canada, where their population is not as numerous. A herd of several hundred wood bison, which are unfortunately in danger of extinction, is separated from the plain bison south of Highway 16, which runs through the park. In 1911, the park was officially incorporated to of Parks Canada, an organization which deal with for example protecting and caring for national parks in Canada. The reserve became Canada’s sixth national park in 1913, however the area south from of Highway 16, was annexed in 1947. Elk Island is 75 square miles (194 square kilometers), what, making it one of the smallest national parks in Canada.

Elk Island National Park is located on terrain the Beaver Hills Biosphere (more information here). It is also part of the Beaver Hills Dark Sky Preserve, which is 300 square kilometers (116 square miles). In short, Dark Sky Reserves deal with protect the night sky and coordinate activities, related to the infrastructure of a particular region with local authorities, so that artificial light does not “litter” the night sky over particular areas. In practice, this aims to minimize the light emitted by, for example, buildings, lamps, road lighting, etc. suchly in order that the beauty of the night sky can be enjoyed in a particular region. Elk Island Reserve has a hilly terrain with an elevation fluctuation of between 30 and 60 meters. This landscape was formed as a result of the glacier melting in place and leaving behind so-called moraine, that is rock sediment carried by the glacier or ice sheet, as well as sediment left by it (melted from its ice). Layers of glacial debris left behind by the glacier have shaped the local terrain into rolling hills and numerous depressions in the form of lakes, as well as wetlands of various sizes and shapes.

FLORA AND FAUNA

Wildlife is one of the key features of Elk Island National Park. The plateau here is home to the largest population of ungulate mammals in all of Canada. These belong plains and wood bison, elk, deer and white-tailed deer. No other reserve has a denser ungulate mammal population per square kilometer than Elk Island. Other large wildlife species that can be seen in the park it is black bear, coyote, lynx and wolf. Of the smaller animals, it is the beaver and shrew. The reserve is shelter for around 250 species of birds that nest or migrate through the park. Herons, hawks, ducks, seagulls, terns, grebes, owls, flycatchers, woodpeckers, and swallows are popular bird species that can be found here. On the other hand, due to low oxygen levels, few fish inhabit the waters here.

Elk Island has been very successful in increasing its ungulate mammal population. This success has been used to export various species of animals for reintroduction and settlement in other regions of North America.

Nearly 450 plant species grow in the park. The most multiple species are: trembling aspen, balsam poplar, black spruce, white spruce, tamarisk, silver birch, horsetails, calendulas, willows, orchids and asters.

CLIMATE

The park has conditions typical of a continental climate. The mountains in the west tend to block the air from the Pacific, whereby the air that crosses the mountains is largely stripped air of moisture. The resulting dry air makes that this the area is susceptible to large temperature fluctuations. Southern air masses from over the United States and Arctic air masses from the north make, that summers are hot and winters very cold.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT THE PARK?

The best months to visit Elk Island National Park are May, June, July and August. The weather is the most reliable then, but keep in mind that this is also when the trails and campgrounds have the highest number of tourists. Winter is also a great time of year for sightseeing. Edmonton winters bring plenty of snow, transforming Elk Island National Park into a paradise for those who enjoy snowshoeing.

ASTOTIN LAKE

Park, past a rich flora and fauna, it is also known for many lakes. The largest of these is Lake Astotin in the north. The lake has 21 islands that can be visited. The best way is to rent a kayak, canoe or paddleboard. Equipment can be rented at Astotin Lake Recreation Area, usually from June to August (largely dependent is from the weather). It is also possible to sail on Lake Astotin, but not in motorized sailboats. At the northern end of the lake there is a landing pier. Many people will enjoy certainly the Living Waters Boardwalk: A 300-meter boardwalk leading across the water. On warm summer evenings, the shores of Lake Astotin are a favorite barbecue spot not only among tourists, but also among Edmonton residents. WHAT ACTIVITIES CAN BE PURSUED IN THE PARK?

Canoeing

The calm sheet of Lake Astotin is ideal for canoeing. In addition to a kayak, you can also rent a paddleboard or canoe boat.

Remember:

When you go out on the lake, always wear a life jacket.

Choose a trip that is appropriate to your experience level and current weather conditions. Try to sail in groups, count of at least two kayaks.

Photography

Elk Island National Park can boast one of the best wildlife viewing in North America. To increase your chances of seeing bison, elk, birds and other creatures, plan your visit around dawn and dusk. Then there are the best chances of seeing Elk Island’s wild inhabitants. There are exhibits and viewpoints along most of the trails. Some of the most spectacular views can be experienced along the shores of Lake Astotin and Tawayik, especially at sunrise and sunset.

Remember:

Do not surround animals, crowd around them or follow them.

Do not pose for photos with wild animals in the background.

Don’t lure wild animals of food or by simulating their sounds.

Don’t honk.

Commercial photography or filming

Professional photographers and filmmakers working on projects in Elk Island National Park must have a temporary business license. To that end, contact the Visitor Center to get to know more about the film permit and about the aforementioned business license.

Birdwatching

Elk Island National Park is a paradise for birdwatchers. In a zone between coniferous forest and aspen forest, there are several habitats in a small area. This vast wetland area provides many species of birds opportunities to feed and breed.

Remember:

Plan your visits at dawn to ensure themselves a better chance of observing birds in their natural habitat.

Spring and autumn migrations are a great opportunity to experience diversity of bird species.

If you want to buy park maps and guidebooks, stop by the Visitor Information Center near the southern entrance gate to the park.

Remember, that some services and facilities are limited in winter.

Wildlife can be viewed from comfortable vehicles, whereby the park is “friendly” for people with disabilities.

Hunting and fishing are prohibited.

Pets must be kept on a leash at all times.

Highway 16 crosses Elk Island National Park on section 10 km. Watch out for plains bison and forest bison, which often cross the local roadway.

During winter, make sure the ice is thick enough before entering a frozen lake. Steam over the ice, or sounds of creaking and cracking, indicate at poor ice cover. The thickness of the ice must be at least 15 cm in order that walking and skating on the ice safe. The thicker the ice, all the better.

PRINCIPLES OF OBSERVATION OF WILD ANIMALS (AS EXEMPLIFIED BY OF THE BISON)

Bison are wild and strong animals. Although they look gentle, they are dangerous, unpredictable and can attack without warning. Visitors have a responsibility to know how to visit the park and observe the animals in a way assuring safe as well as tourists and wild creatures.

Follow these tips to enjoy every encounter with bison in Elk Island National Park.

In the car:

Drive slowly and the bison will move out of your way.
Don’t honk or drive aggressively. Attacks on vehicles are rare, but can happen.
Stop and view bison from a distance only when it is safe. Always stay in your vehicle.

Walk or bike:

Be aware of your surroundings and watch for wild animals.
When approaching blind curves, drive slowly in case a bison is just around the bend.
Never pass across a herd on the road. Wait until the herd to move on or turn around.
Frightened bison often run away and then stop and look back. Go around any bison that remain in the area. Wait for the bison to move, walk around them and leave room for them to escape or slowly retreat.
Don’t do tourism in any form (walking, biking, etc.) with headphones in your ears.
Do not approach a bison closer than 100 meters, and never try to shoo.

Use your thumb:

How does it “work”? The visitor raises his thumb to embrace the bison. This method indicates that the visitor is at least 100 meters away from the animal.

In practice

Keep your fist extended in front of you and raise your thumb. Embrace the bison (which is standing sideways) with your thumb. If the bison is completely covered, you are at a safe distance of about 100 meters. If your thumb does not cover the entire bison, back away slowly until your thumb covers at completely animal.

Keep extreme caution:

In May and June, when female bison are very protective versus of their newborn calves.
In July and August, during the mating season, when males are aggressive and dangerous.
With dogs. Pets must be on a leash and under control at all times, as they can challenge the bison and provoke them to attack. It is a good idea to have a muzzle on one, in case the dog starts barking and thereby causes stress to the bison.
On the trails. Avoid approaching bison along trails. They may then attack more easily. Make them aware that someone is there by talking loudly or clapping. If the bison don’t move, retreat slowly.
Never enter a herd of bison on foot or step between two animals, especially between a mother and her offspring.

Bison warning signs

Be alert and aware of bison warning signs and back away slowly when a bison:

It snorts, shakes or tosses its head.
Raises its tail.
Taps its hooves against the ground.
Falsely charges.
If bison stop grazing to explore their surroundings, immediately start backing away until the animals return to grazing.
Bison often give a shout, cautionary, when someone gets too close.

Emergencies:

Call Parks Canada dispatch 1-877-852-3100 if you notice incidents with wildlife, disrupting the peace at the campsite, fire, poaching or first aid. For emergencies, call 911.

TIDBITS

Park staff successfully re-established Elk Island’s beaver population in the 1940s, after trappers had almost completely eliminated them from the area in the mid-19th century.

In the park, we will found more than 80 kilometers (50 miles) of hiking trails.

European fur traders arrived in Alberta between the late 18th and mid-19th centuries. Unfortunately, they soon contributed to the near extinction of bison, elk and beaver.

SUMMARY

Running away from civilization doesn’t always require hopping on a plane to get to an exotic destination thousands of miles away. Sometimes enough a 30-minute driving a car to immerse yourself in nature for a few hours or days. Such a place is certainly Elk Island National Park, where tourists can see a myriad of different species of birds or mammals. Elk Island is at second place in terms of ungulate mammal density per square kilometer, and “loses” in this regard only to Serengeti National Park. The park also worth going to the reserve at night to admire the beautifully starry Canadian sky.

TRUNK BAY

Trunk Bay beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. It is located on the island of Saint John belonging to the US Virgin Islands in its northwestern part. Besides relaxing on the beach, you can also go snorkeling and admire the underwater life of the local coral reef. Through its picturesque scenery, which it owes to the white sand, turquoise water, and excellent weather practically all year round, this place is often visited by photographers.

SHORT DESCRIPTION

The premises of the Virgin Islands National Park, which has about 27 square miles, is Trunk Bay in Saint John. By attaching the bay to the reserve cause, that the archipelago has remained away from urban development. In that, it is one of the most virgin places in the Caribbean. The area consists of a crescent-shaped beach three-tenths of a mile long (almost 0.5 km) and the islet of Trunk Cay, and all is surrounded by hills. Whereas, under the water, on the west side of the beach and around Trunk Cay, there are coral reefs that are often visited by divers.

HOW TO GET TO THE ISLAND?

The island can only be reached by ferry, as there is no official airport on the island. First one should to fly to the island of St. Thomas, and then from the airport get a cab to the port of Charlotte Amalie or Red Hook. From there, by boat, we can reach Cruz Bay on the island of St. John. From Red Hook the ferry runs 20 minutes, whereas from Charlotte Amalie the trip lasts about 45 minutes (from Charlotte Amalie the ferry leaves much rarely frequently than from Red Hook).

HOW TO GET TO THE BAY

From Cruz Bay, take Route 20 (North Shore Road), and drive about 3.5 miles. On the way, there is a picturesque viewpoint (Trunk Bay Outlook), from which most of the photos are taken of the bay. Unfortunately, there is no parking there, so it is best to park in the nearby parking lot near Peace Hill Trial and walk to the viewpoint. Be careful because the road does not have any sidewalk/roadside. Continue driving down the hill, and after a while you will begin to see signs indicating a parking lot at Trunk Beach.

WHAT CAN YOU FIND ON THE BEACH?

The beach there is a bar with snacks, drinks and a grill, which is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. There are also beach chair rental shops, picnic tables, showers, toilets and a gift store. The beach is guarded and there is always there a lifeguard (usually from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.).

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO GO TO THE BAY?

It’s best to go to the beach early in the morning to avoid the crowds. The sunrises at Trunk Bay are amazing, and it’s worth taking your camera with you at this time. Getting there before the crowds is important if you have a rental car because the nearer to noon, the parking lot at the beach gets more and more full. If we go there later around noon or after noon, it is best to take a cab. Sunsets at Trunk Bay are also magnificent, with low-set clouds often appearing in the blue sky, providing ideal conditions for taking beautiful photos.

WHAT HOURS IS THE BEACH OPEN?

Trunk Beach is open for tourists 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Toilets and showers are open from 8 am to 4 pm.

ABOUT WHAT SHOULD REMEMBER?

Sunscreen – this is one of the most important things to take with you. It will protect our skin from the glaring sun and possible burns. It should remember that many sunscreens have been banned in the Virgin Islands because of ingredients which damage coral reefs. Fortunately, such sunscreens can be purchased on the island in many stores, including grocery stores.

Sandals or flip-flops – the walk to the beach from the parking lot is short, but it leads through the woods, and it is better to take them to avoid a possible cutting.

Snorkeling equipment – in Trunk Bay, there is an underwater trail that shows the beauty of the offshore coral reefs. However, in order to swim trail, you need snorkeling equipment, that is a mask, tube, and fins. If we do not have our own equipment, we can rent it, for example, at St. John Beach Bum in Cruz Bay.

Waterproof camera case – if you want to take photos/video of sea creatures and coral reefs, it is essential to equip yourself at a case for camera to avoid flooded.

Ultraviolet (UV) filter for the camera – such an accessory will certainly help us to better set the camera and take a lovely photo of the sunrise or sunset over the bay.

TIPS

The beach is most crowded near the entrance. If you want to avoid the crowds, it’s a good idea to go down the beach to the west (on the left when looking toward the ocean). In that area, just behind the rocks, is also the small Jumbie Beach. Additionally, the western part of the beach is more shaded.

Green turtles are protected under the Endangered Species Act. Touching or coming too close to them is considered an offense, and you can get a fine.

Parking at the bay can offer about 40 parking spaces.

Unlike other beaches on St. John, at Trunk Bay there is a $5 entrance fee.(If you have an America the Beautiful National Park Pass, admission is free, read more about the pass here). Cash or card is accepted, but it is recommended to have cash in case of power outages or other problems.

Kayaking or paddleboarding is prohibited.

Occasionally, jellyfishes may appear in the bay. Swerve them when diving to avoid possible burns.

THE UNDERWATER TRAIL

The Underwater Snorkel Trail is a great option for people who beginning to snorkeling. The trail is located at the west wall of Trunk Cay (when looking toward the ocean) and measures about 600-700 feet in length (183-213 meters, each source gives a different value). The underwater trail is marked with plates that you can swim up to. Plates contain information about the reef and the species of fish that can be seen there. Some of them have warnings written, such as “Do not touch turtles and coral.” The coral reef is only 30 meters from the beach. Although many tourists visit this the area, it is still one of the best snorkeling place on St. John, where you can see tropical fish, stingrays, sea snails, arrow crabs, coral and even green turtles. The depth does not exceed 16-20 meters (different sources give a different value). More experienced divers can circumnavigate the entire islet of Trunk Cay (it takes about 1 hour), as the entire island is surrounded by a coral reef. It is worth remembering that on the eastern side of the islet, the reef is more “barren” and inhabited by fewer sea creatures, due to weaker protection from waves.

ATTENTION! Depending on the weather, tides and phase of the moon, there may be strong waves and currents on the far shore of the bay. Use common sense, never exceed your capabilities, and always dive with someone.

ACCOMMODATION

The nearest resorts are located in Cruz Bay. It is just a 10-minute drive or cab ride from the beach. For those looking for privacy and amenities in the form of a cottage or villa, on the island, there are almost 400 rental offers. TIDBITS

In 2017, the island of Saint John was hit by Hurricane Maria, which destroyed most of the local flora.

Trunk Bay is named after the largest sea turtle in the world – the leatherback sea turtle, which is known by islanders as “trunks.”

Apparently, on St. John, there is not a single stoplight.

The population of St. John Island is about 5,000 people. During the peak season, which is between December and March, due to tourists, the number of human rises to 40,000.

SAN JUAN ISLANDS

The amazing San Juan Islands archipelago abounds with rich flora and fauna. These islands, located in the northwestern part of the USA, near the border with Canada, attract crowds of tourists. They owe it to the animals that can be seen here in their natural habitat. The most popular are, of course, the sea expeditions offering observation of orcas, as well as sea lions or humpback whales.

GEOLOGY

Over 12,000 years ago, the Vashon Glacier covered the entire area a layer of ice about thick 4,200 feet (1,280 meters). The glacier’s movements chipped away land masses and carved deep canyons, which are now filled in seawater. The glacier moved southward, leaving behind erratic boulders from British Columbia. It gouged the rock surfaces and formed four broad bands known as the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Rosario Strait, Strait of Georgia and Haro Strait, creating water channels that surround the San Juan Islands. Four distinct mountain ranges can be seen from the shores of the islands, formed by faulting, corrugating and volcanic activity. These mountain rages surround the inland waters. To the west rise the Olympic Mountains and the Vancouver Island Range, and to the east rise the mountains in British Columbia. These mountain ranges accumulate snow in winter and provide fresh water to streams which flow into the inner Salish Sea.

SAN JUAN ARCHIPELAGO

San Juan Islands

The San Juan Islands Archipelago is a group of 175 islands, located in Washington State, located in the middle of the Salish Sea, north of Seattle. If counted all the exposed islets while low tide, the number would rise to 700. 84 of these islands are designated as National Wildlife Refuges.

On San Juan Island is the town Friday Harbor, apart, a 1-hour ferry ride from Anacortes. It is the second-largest island with an area of 56 square miles (145 km2) and is home to about 7,500 residents. On the west side of the island is Limestone State Park, also known as Whale Watch Park. There is red algae (frog spit) growing along the shoreline, which provides an excellent habitat for fish, which swim from the open ocean to the surrounding rivers. A place to relax with beautiful panoramas can be found at Jackson’s Beach, South Beach, Jakle’s Lagoon, Cattle Point and 4th of July Beach. Limekiln State Park and San Juan State Park are known off their opportunities to see orcas and whales.

Lopez Island

Lopez Island, measuring 29 square miles (72 km2), apart, is a 45-minute ferry ride from Anacortes. It is inhabited by approximately 2,500 residents. Both Spencer Spit State Park and Odlin State Park offer opportunities for camping and relaxing in the bosom of nature. There are many places, where you can marvel at scenic views of Haro Strait, the Olympic Mountains, Vancouver Island, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and the Rainier Mountains. There we can observe seabirds, seals, sea lions and whales.

Shaw Island

The smallest of the islands served by ferries, it has an area of 8 square miles (just under 21 km2) and is home to 235 people. It is definitely the most peaceful of the four main islands. The only accommodations are at South Beach Park on Indian Cove. There are 11 campgrounds located.

Orcas Island

Orcas Island, about area 57 square miles (just under 148 km2), is the largest of all the islands. It is inhabited by about 5,500 people. Eastsound, a large fjord carved by a glacier, crosses an island, whereby it resembles a horseshoe in shape. From the viewpoint at the height 2,409 meters above sea level atop Constitution Mountain (the highest point in the San Juans), there is a magnificent view for the whole archipelago. There are two state parks on the island: Moran State Park (where you can camp at Northend Camp) and Pass State Park.

HOW TO GET TO SAN JUAN ISLAND

Ferries sail out regularly from the city of Anacortes to San Juan Island. If you are traveling, for example from Seattle, to get to Friday Harbor, Anacortes is the starting point for ferry travel to either island. Below are directions to the Anacortes Ferry Terminal. The Anacortes Ferry Terminal is located at 2100 Ferry Terminal Road, Anacortes, WA 98221.

Take Highway 5, north to the Burlington exit. Turn west (left) on Highway 20 until you reach Anacortes. In downtown Anacortes, follow the signs (San Juan Island Ferries) to the ferry landing.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME FOR WHALE WATCHING?

Peak season is during the summer months, from mid-June to mid-September. Orcas, humpback whales, sea lions and minke whales can be seen in this time. Whales are here virtually all year round, but outside the summer months their occurrence in these waters is sporadic. During winter (December, January), usually does not organize tours due to unpredictable weather, strong winds and low temperatures.

WHICH COMPANY ORGANIZING CRUISES TO CHOOSE?

The most sensible option is to choose a company that is a member of the Pacific Whale Watch Association- a community of ecotourism professionals who combine an involvement for education, conservation and responsible wildlife viewing. PWWA members put the right of the whales first, which watch and model the proper course of the ship/boat so that the animals are not stressed. This is important because private boating trips in these waters cause severe stress to the whales. PWWA helps reduce violations by warning private mariners with warning flags about the appearance of whales. They also work closely with ferries, tankers, cruise ships, military ships, and other vessels. They inform them in order that slow down when whales are nearby and thus minimize underwater noise, and keep a proper distance.

In summer, it is necessary to book a tour minimum one week prior. In this time is so many applicants for sea cruises during this period, that booking overnight is virtually impossible.

WHAT DO I NEED TO TAKE ON A CRUISE?

– Warm clothes (long pants, sweatshirt) – afloat is much colder than on land (the difference can reach to 20 degrees Celsius at strong winds)

– Hat or cap

– Flat shoes, preferably with a rubber sole, e.g. tennis shoes

– Raincoat or windbreaker

– Gloves – especially in spring and autumn

– Sunglasses

– Sunscreen

– Binoculars

– Camera

– Water bottle, cannot be glass!!!

– Food/snacks

– Backpack

TIPS

Arrive early

All guests must be checked in and come in to board 15 minutes before the scheduled make sail. It’s a good idea to arrive 30 minutes before your sea journey, to find parking (and pay for a parking space, if it is paid) and pack up your things before the tour.

Photography tips

If you choose the boat cruise option, it’s a good idea to go to the upper viewing decks. This gives the photographer a wider field of view and easier to spot the animals. If you need extra support, it’s a good idea to take a monopod instead of a tripod, due to the small amount of space on the upper decks and to not disturb other photographers.

HOW ABOUT A KAYAK?

The San Juan Outfitters Whale Sanctuary Tour is a two- or three-day tour for guests, who are already experienced in sea kayaking or are in good physical condition. This tour passes through what is known as the Southern Resident Killer on the west side of San Juan Island, and the goal is chance observe wildlife, including a population of orcas. Since the route is mostly through their territory, this form of trip offers one of the best chances to see orcas up close. You can read more about the expedition on the official website (link here).

WHERE IS THE BEST PLACE TO OBSERVE ORCAS FROM THE SHORE?

To observe marine animals, you don’t have to take a boat trip deep into the sea every time. There are several places on San Juan Island from which you can view orcas, porpoises, sea lions, or seals. It’s always a good idea to have binoculars with you.

Lime Kiln Point State Park

Lime Kiln Point State Park is officially named “Whale Watch Park.” This title is no coincidence. This park is truly one of the best places to watch migrating orcas or whales. The coastline of the park consists of cliffs, whereby the depth of water at the shore get to several dozen meters. This allows orcas and other whales to swim very close to the shoreline. Some scientists speculate that orcas use the steep seabed to catch schools of salmon. Other attractions to see in the park, it is a historic lighthouse from 1919 and the remains of the original lime kiln, which was started in 1860 when the resource was mined in the surrounding area.

San Juan Island National Historical Park

Near Cattle Point Lighthouse in San Juan Island National Historical Park, you may see sea lions. They are usually sprawl on the gravel shoreline. If you’re lucky, you may also spot flocks of orcas.

Westside Preserve

Westside Preserve is one of the favorite areas among local orca watchers. So it can be said that Westside Preserve is the perfect place for a more private experience. Although the preserve seems secluded, it can be accessed via West Side Rd. At the parking lot is a place for over a dozen cars.

San Juan County Park

This 12-acre park on the west side of San Juan Island is a great spot for launching kayaks. From here, you can sail up to the orca territory. It is possible to kayak in Smallpox Bay or go out into the open sea if you have the proper permits.

WHAT GUIDELINES YOU SHOULD RESPECT

If you encounter a marine mammal (e.g. a seal) on any beach, make sure, that you are at least 100 yards (about 91 meters) from the animal.
Private kayakers should become acquainted to the Kayaker Code of Conduct. If you are on a guided kayak tour, pay attention to the guide’s instructions concern of safe wildlife viewing.

SMART SAILING

In 2011, regulations implemented in America requiring sailors to maintain a distance of 200 yards (about 182 meters) from animals and to keep a clear path for swimming marine mammals. These regulations apply to all ships (with some exceptions) on Washington State’s inland waters. A program called the Soundwatch Boater Education Program, conducted by The Whale Museum, educates sailors on appropriate ways to observe orcas/whales in their environment.

Boats should not be driven if the whale is within 100 yards (about 91 meters). If the animal is between 100 and 200 yards (91-182 meters) away, the operator should start the engine and slowly move back 200 yards (182 meters) or more away from the animal.

THE PROBLEM WITH … SALMON

San Juan area orcas became listed as an endangered species in 2005. In the mid-1990s, were about 100 individuals around the San Juan Islands. By July 2021, their numbers had dropped to 74. One of the main reasons why it’s happening, is the salmon population declining every year, which the orcas feed on and other animals such as sea otters. Nowadays, the offspring of orcas are not so numerous and often die prematurely. On the other hand, females are unable to produce enough food to feed them. Then, males are not maturing enough to reproduce.

A major reason for the decline in salmon populations is the 4 dams built between 1957 and 1975 by the Army Corps of Engineers on the Snake River in southern Washington State. They were built to stimulate the economy of Idaho City by transporting goods by river. SUMMARY

The San Juan Archipelago is undoubtedly one of the few places in the world where tourists can observe orcas or other marine mammals up close in their natural environment. Cruise companies usually offer full-day trips, as well as three- or five-hour trips. We can also use private cruises, which will give us more comfort and “intimacy” while observing the nature of San Juan. For people who have a good condition, will be an interesting option, a two- or three-day guided kayak trip with the opportunity to swim alongside a herd of orcas. Whichever option you choose, it is certain, that it will be unforgettable experiences.
